European Cancer Nursing Day 2017
On 18 May 2017, we celebrated the first European Cancer Nursing Day. Nurses all over Europe took part, sending in pictures and tweeting to mark this important event.
It was all about recognising and celebrating the positive impact that oncology nurses have on the quality of cancer care across Europe.
This massively important day was celebrated online through websites and social media at #ECND2017 and on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/cancernurseEU.
As part of the celebrations, a special Education Day in Clinical Cancer Nursing took place in Tallinn, Estonia. EONS worked closely with the Estonian Cancer Nursing Society to develop this support for Estonian cancer nurses.
EONS President Danny Kelly said: “European Cancer Nursing Day was an important day. It was important because we recognised the crucial work that cancer nurses do everyday, in the hospitals, clinics, hospices and homes across Europe.
“ECND is only the start in our ambition to achieve the goal of recognition for all cancer nurses. We will continue our campaign at the highest level; and the annual European Cancer Nursing Day will focus on a different theme each year, based on the strategic CARE plan of EONS.”
European Cancer Nursing Day links with the REcognising Cancer Nursing in Europe (RECaN) project by raising the profile of cancer nurses and calling for their contribution to be better understood and valued. Led by the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) and supported by the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO), the project aims to consolidate evidence to clarify and effectively position the contribution of specialised cancer nursing as an essential supportive function during the cancer journey for the benefit of all patients, as well as European health systems.
ECCO released a Position Paper: Value of Specialised Cancer Nursing to coincide with the event:
