EONS 11

A fantastic opportunity

The EONS11 conference at ESMO 2018 Congress was a huge success. EONS members came together from across Europe and beyond to hear the latest developments in cancer nursing practice and research from which to learn and develop their knowledge and skills.

The EONS11 three-day nursing track (20-22 October) focused on five major themes: cancer nursing leadership, symptom management, patient safety, new cancer research and cancer nurse roles. Participants also benefited from sharing medical oncology sessions at ESMO 2018 Congress, and from a number of sponsored satellite symposia on a variety of important cancer nursing topics.

The EONS Advisory Council and General Meeting took place on the morning of 19 October before the ESMO conference started. EONS members heard about the work the organisation has been doing on their behalf over the last year and about our plans for the future. (Minutes of these meetings will appear in the further information section of this page in due course.)

“Joining our conference with ESMO 2018 meant many extra benefits for EONS members. In addition to EONS11 (cancer nursing track), members had access to all ESMO sessions, posters, submitted abstracts and teaching sessions. On top of this, a number of satellite symposia with industry sponsors brought even more educational opportunities than ever! These elements lent a stronger emphasis to our discussions around cancer nursing leadership and the need for increasingly close collaboration with medical oncologists in the multi-disciplinary team.” Lena continued: “On the lighter side, EONS Lounge area provided a space where members were able to relax, network with colleagues from all over Europe and talk to the EONS team about all the exciting things that are going on. We also announced a number of awards, including the highly prestigious EONS Lifetime Achievement Award, which went, with many congratulations, to former EONS President Birgitte Grube from Denmark.

“Fantastic porgramme of high-profile speakers”

“And last but definitely not least, special thanks goes to our Scientific Committee of experts who developed a fantastic programme of high-profile speakers on topics related to our five themes.

The topics we focussed on in Munich went right to the heart of what cancer nursing is about today – the challenges, the opportunities, our aspirations and our goals.”

If you weren’t able to come, or want to revisit the memories, you can get a flavour of our conference on Twitter at #EONS11, on www.facebook.com/cancernurseEU and www.instagram.com/eu_oncology_nursing_society/

A special issue of the EONS Magazine will report on the conference in late 2018/early 2019.
