14th ESO-EONS Masterclass in Oncology Nursing – a huge success

The 14th ESO-EONS Masterclass in Oncology Nursing took place in Varese, Italy, from October 6-10 and was another huge success. European advanced cancer nurses participated in the multi professional joint event run by EONS and ESO (European School of Oncology). Four intensive days of full immersion in up-to-date oncology took place in a collective spirit of teaching and learning to improve clinical skills and patient care. The specific nursing-oriented sessions explored specialist practice skills such as assessment and decision making, communication skills, complex symptom management, research in nursing, psychosocial consequences of cancer therapy, and more. Other sessions provided a forum for reviewing and understanding the growing evidence base for nursing interventions and reflect on participants’ role in clinical leadership. Case studies were presented by the participants and explored nursing practice focusing on special aspects of care. Joint sessions with physicians highlighted and supported the growing need for multiprofessionality in chosen topics. Practical training was offered in smaller group sessions.
